Halloween~ The Spooky Season

The spooky Halloween season is here. October is the month when people wear scary costumes and light bonfires to keep off the evil souls. October 31st night is when Halloween is celebrated. Although the holiday was introduced in America in the mid-1800s, over time, the activities of Halloween evolved so much.

“Werewolves Howl

 Phantoms Prowl

 Halloween is Upon

 Us Now.”

 ____Richelle E. Goodrich

Why Is Halloween Celebrated:

The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain is the main root of Halloween. Halloween is celebrated to let go of evil spirits. Pope Gorge III, in the 18th century, declared November 1st to honor all saints. The evening before Halloween is known as Halloween Eve. The United Kingdom, the Celts living in Ireland, the northern France people celebrate their New Year on November 1st. Celts celebrate Samhain and believe there is no boundary between living and the dead world a night before the new year.

“Nothing on Earth is so beautiful as the final haul on Halloween night.”___Steve Almond

Halloween is celebrated at the end of summer and the beginning of cold winter nights. This time of the year is mainly associated with deaths. This is because they believed that on Halloween, the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.

Halloween was much more common in Maryland and the southern colonies. In southern colonies, people celebrate Halloween by dancing, singing to remember dead ones, and sharing ghost stories.

Activities Of Halloween:

Some of the most common activities of Halloween are,

  • Trick-or-treating
  • Candy corn
  • Jack O' Lanterns

Trick-or-treating:

“Sticky fingers, tired feet; one last house “Trick or treat".” __ Rusty Fisher

The Roman All Soul’s Day holiday is the base of that activity. On that day, people knock at the doors and praise the souls of their dead ones in return for a piece of cake called “Souling.” However, this activity is changed in Scotland and Ireland where children wear scary and spooky costumes and sing poems and song “tricks” and in return get “treats.”

Candy corn:

The candy was first marketed as “Chicken Feed” and sold with a tagline “Something worth crowing for.”George Renninger of Philadelphia's Wunderle Candy Company was the founder of that delicious candy. This iconic sweet candy is tri-colored yellow, white, and orange.

Jack O' Lanterns:

The transformation of pumpkins into scary and funny Jack O' Lanterns. This activity will make your Halloween a fun event. They are commonly associated with the Halloween holiday.

“There is magic in the night when the pumpkins glow by moonlight.”
