Summer Birds Hunting

Summer is the ideal season for upland hunting. Off-season shotgun hunting will do wonders as it may provide you more time to practice targeted shots and will train you more for the upcoming duck hunting season.

Our blog is about some top summer birds and how you can satisfy your quest for summer hunting.

Summer Birds:

Some top summer birds to enjoy your summer hunting season are,

  • Feral Pigeons
  • Crows
  • Eurasian Collared-Doves
  • Early Geese

Feral Pigeons:

Feral pigeons are present everywhere, and they build their nests near storage buildings, areas near livestock operations, silos, and dilapidated barns

Pigeons are very intelligent, and setting the trap is not as easy as it seems. The bird will learn quickly, so you have to change your strategies from time to time. For pigeons, you can use different decoys as “dead bird decoys” will help attract pigeons; however, "motion decoys" are lethal.

One thing which is mandatory for pigeon hunts is concealment in layout or stand-up blind.

Crows:

Crows are considered delicious game meat, and different organizations and agencies give the farmers a shotgun to protect their crops. Crows are present in the crop fields and feed on the tops of the cob, sweet corn, fruits, and seeds, sometimes destroying the whole field.

Only a small group of hunters are now after summer crow hunting, which means there are more opportunities for you. Crow hunting can be a good option for veterans to enjoy their summer season.

In summer, crows have smaller families, so when you place decoys, there is a chance that only 2 or 3 birds are attracted. Focused on the food source areas near the crow roosts. The best time to hunt crows on a summer day is in the morning

Eurasian Collared-Doves:

While looking for the pigeons in summer, you may also encounter Eurasian collared doves, which are distinctive due to the black ring at their neck and make a certain kind of reaa call.

They are invasive species in the United States, and you can hunt them all year round, but in the summer season, you must be careful because while on a summer pigeon hunt, if you hunt a mourning dove, it will be considered as game violation.

Learn the difference between mourning dove and Eurasian dove, and then head to the summer hunt. Collared doves have black tails, while mourning doves have pointy ones. Eurasian doves are fast and have a straight flight pattern

Early Geese:

Late summer geese are considered easy targets, but some factors make them difficult to locate as their feeding patterns are not rigid, and they also do not have to face food shortages.

It is advised to scout a couple of weeks before the start of the actual season, and the early season geese hunting requires fewer decoys than later. Summer geese are not so vocal, so making high calls will not help you; instead, you should rely on flagging to attract honkers and guide them to your setup.

Hope this blog will motivate you to not waste time and go on a summer birds hunting trip to enjoy your summer vacations.
